Tales From The Silk Road

This piece was designed and made as a reversible theatre costume for the character of the princess in the Turkish fairytale, “The Horse Devil and the Witch”.
My main task was creating the motifs on both sides of the garment. The motif and colours chosen for the red side were made through block printing and are influenced by the Turkish rose and a traditional shade of red made from natural dyes, while the blue side represents the princess’ transformation into a spring, therefore, freehand swirls in blues and cream were added to resemble water waves and ripples.
I also led the pattern drafting for the costume and worked alongside my fellow group members in the sewing of the garment.
