Rebeca Ilie

Costume Maker, Historical Fashion Collector, Vintage Model

About me

I am a second-year costume design student at Wimbledon College of Arts, and my passion resides in creating historical costumes that transport the viewer to new worlds through the stories I tell, stitch by stitch.

Originally from Romania, my heritage plays an important role in my work. Being raised to learn resourcefulness and the ability to make something beautiful with little, I also grew an immeasurable amount of respect and fascination for traditional crafts of every kind and in a world which is moving further and further away from these, I am proud to devote every minute of my life to bringing back art, beauty and the human touch.

My practice goes beyond traditional costume making. I believe that different mediums of art are not mutually exclusive and, on the contrary, merging them together opens up so many more possibilities for storytelling. Many of my concepts heavily rely on incorporating painting, sculpting, and unconventional materials as well as sewing to develop costumes which are expressive and become their own individual characters from head to toe.

Sustainability is a key part of this approach. My creativity is so deeply influenced by the natural world and to show my respect, I strive to make every project as sustainable as possible. My favourite part of creating is collecting secondhand, vintage, and even upholstery natural fabrics and collating a mixture of textures, colours and patterns around me from which I can pull to create a new design. I work with the earth and its resources, not against it.

My goals are to learn as many artistic disciplines as possible, keep developing my art, and try to satiate the hungry desire to create beauty and art by passing these skills along in the future.

But before I can get there, perhaps you’d like to take a moment and step into my current world of theatrics, history and art…
